Guidance for parents asked to provide GP note for school

GPs do not have a statutory duty to provide sick notes for pupil’s school absences, including exam absences. The responsibility for managing attendance and determining whether absences are legitimate sits with parents, carers and the school itself and letters will not be provided.

If the school ask for proof of an appointment please use the surgery text message confirming the appointment time for this purpose.

In exceptional circumstances, when parents and school, feel further evidence is required a letter or report may be requested. These requests will be considered on a case by case basis. Please note that this is not a service funded by the NHS so a fee may be charged for this work.
